La Clase Mágica

La Clase Mágica

An after-school program affiliated with UC San Diego, La Clase Mágica primarily works with bilingual children in underrepresented communities to help them build literacy and life skills for future learning success. La Clase Mágica received support from Volunteer50 for their event Mi Arte Mi Voz (My Art, My Voice), in which the K-6 students presented stories representing themselves and their culture that they had digitally created with the help of undergraduates from UC San Diego. During the event, volunteers served as mentors to students, led campus tours and helped run workshops about higher education.

Around the World in a Day

Around the World in a Day

UC San Diego alumni and students from around the world gave their time, talent and treasure on Saturday, April 18, 2015 as part of the first ever Around the World in One Day project, organized by the School of Global Policy and Strategy. From San Diego to Washington, D.C., across Europe and Japan, alumni and friends participated in giving back to their community on this one special day. In San Diego, more than 100 volunteers—with support from Volunteer50—arrived at Ross Elementary School to build planter boxes for the school’s garden and paint inspirational messages throughout the hallways.

Spring Backpacking

Spring Backpacking

Sixth graders from Bayside Elementary School in Imperial Beach went back to school in fall 2014 with new backpacks, school supplies and notes of encouragement to help them in their transition to middle school. At Bayside, where the majority of students qualify for a free or reduced lunch program, many families lack the financial resources to obtain basic school supplies. As part of an ongoing partnership with the school, UC San Diego students assembled the back-to-school packages during a spring service event hosted by The Village at Torrey Pines Residential Life Office and the Warren Association of Volunteer Enthusiasts.
